Ryak Finch Competes at Junior World Championships

Ryak Finch of Safford, Arizona lost his only match while competing for the USA in the 55-kg weight class at the Junior World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Finch will be a freshman at Iowa State this fall. Ryak lost to Nomin Batbold of Mongolia in the first round by a 2-7, 0-5 score. Batbold was the 2010 Asian Junior silver medalist. Ryak was eliminated from the tournament when Batbold lost to Rasul Mashezov of Russia, in the quarterfinals. A wrestler can only qualify for the repechage if the wrestler they lost to makes the finals. The USA squad only had one wrestler who medaled in the competition. Chris Perry of Oklahoma State won the bronze medal at 84-kg. The USA also had three fifth place finishes.

 

Travis Paulson Wins Silver in Azerbaijan

Travis Paulson finished second in the 74-kg freestyle competition at the Heydar Aliyev International Wrestling Tournament held in Baku, Azerbaijan this past weekend. Travis went 4-1 on the day, but lost his finals match by the score of 0-3, 2-0, 0-1 to Aleksander Gostiev of Russia. Travis opened the day with a 1-0, 3-0 win over Kamal Malikov of Russia. In the second round Travis defeated Giya Chykhladze of the Ukraine, 1-0, 1-0. In the quarterfinals Travis pinned Abdulkhahim Shapiyev of Kazakhstan, 0-3, pin. Then in the semi-finals Paulson beat 2003 World Champion Irbek Farniev of Russia, 1-0, 1-0. MORE»
